Believing Yourself (?)

Do you believe in yourself?

That question pops out pretty often everytime. People are unique. We can be smart and dumb at the same time. Love turns to hatred in just a second. Confidence and insecurity have no clear barrier. And the strongest person can be the weakest inside of them all. We’re all confused. And when a person asks another person, they will say non other thing than:

Just believe in yourself!

Many stories are told about human strength, magical realities or cliche fictions. Some of you may post motivational quotes everyday on your instagram account to just show people of how thankful should we be as a human. Some print and put them on their cubical office wall just to remind themselves of not forgetting to do things the quote writer said.

Do you think you know yourself?

That’s another question. When you feel a little headache on the right part of your head, are you sure that’s just a usual migrain that you’ve had since 2011 instead of brain cancer? When you feel like you want to kill the person who’s dating your crush, are you sure that’s just a normal jealousy instead of you actually having a psychopath behaviour that might bring the actual harm in the future?

Haven’t they written many stories about us? Religiously, culturally, scientifically. Do they make us feel better, or become more anxious instead? Do you get an inspiration from how a real love does exist from ‘The Notebook’ story and happily looking for your own at this moment, or are you actually sitting in the most expensive restaurant, having the most expensive food, wearing the most expensive clothes, reading this with the most expansive device and feel betrayed of how mean people made that story and promised us about the thing that you think is the biggest conspiracy of human civilization history, that thing called love? Do you feel really thankful after watching ‘The Sisterhood of Travelling Pants’ and realize you have amazing friends just like they showed or Do you feel afraid that they might not be your besties anymore in a few year, just like those people you called best friends back in high school?

You don’t know yourself.

If that’s actually what you’re thinking, how irrelevant do you think that question is? How can you be sure you’re smart enough to finish your university thesis on time, but still work on it all night anyway? How can you be convinced that you’re gonna be rich and be able to afford a Birkin bag or a pair of Louboutin shoes you’ve been dreaming since the 10th grade from those fashion magazine? How can you even still ask for people’s opinion when you yourself don’t even know what to do, to your own goddamn life, but never even take the advises and do what you think is right yourself but still never be satisfied with the result?

You know yourself.

You think you’re one step ahead and being really confident. But how can you explain of what you’re actually doing for your life now? You’re fun but you hate that you’re not pretty. You’re rich but you don’t think you don’t have friends. You’re smart but you’re sad of having a partner that’s not smarter than you. You’re pretty and rich but you heard that people say you’re dumb. You’re smart and rich but you’re not OK of having no social life. You’re rich, smart, pretty, fun and the perfections are lining up but you’re never satisfied with the colour of your hair dye and waste a lot of moment in your mind cursing of how imperfect your hair is.

But you said you know yourself. And you believe in yourself. But the more you know yourself, the more flaw you reveal you have yourself. So tell me who actually ourselves are.

Earthy Autumn

It’s this time of the year again, when the sun is cooling down and all you need are cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and lots of cuddling. As this is the first day of autumn, let’s prepare ourselves in all fashionable ways possible to long afternoon walk or even just taking pictures besides the beautiful yellow-leaves autumn trees.

As the mood of autumn always give me kind of an earthy feelings, let’s explore some ideas through some top designers and retailers with earthy yellow-brown impression as the manifesto of mother earth. It doesn’t need to be boring by just put it with black and white. Vivienne Westwood put a blue long coat with hood and it’s just as interesting.  Let’s take the advantage of being creative: we don’t buy these crazy expensive clothing which the socialites only wear for one season but we can take a look at our wardrobe and mix and match them to look like ones. Because you know, old is the new new.

The Tradition With Modern Touch

It is mid September in Bahrain but the  sun still proudly shines throughout all the Gulf. We all know what it means, longer time for shorts and shades, tanner skin, beachwear show offs, ice creams with fruit toppings, you know, all other  perks of living in Middle East. When most of people are whining about the heat (for God’s sake, what do they expect for living in this place? snow?), I who happens to love every moment of summer take the advantage of it by walking every day back and forth to work. Seizing the moment as this might be one of the thing that can remind me of home: being sweaty at the day time. Stick around with deodorant!

This weekend is supposed to be technically the last weekend of summer, so why don’t we have a little bit summer moment. Anything would do. Camping, beach party, mountain adventure, a golf match, or just simple thing like I did this morning: having breakfast. Hold back and relax, you might have breakfast every morning but guess who can have the real Arabian breakfast this morning? Of course not you! Well, unless you actually had.

It was the Manama Souq where I was heading this morning. Along with my family, we arrived at the famous city landmark, Bab Al Bahrain (literally means Gateway of Bahrain) around 8.30 AM, our version of perfect breakfast time. The magnificent white gate was welcoming us as we parked the car right in front of it. Some pigeons were eating anything they could find on the ground, A lot of people were passing by or just hanging out around the circle fountain behind the gate. It was beautiful summer morning.

Bab Al-Bahrain

Pigeons loved us

We walked deeper through the small alleys to get to the place. The alley was definitely smaller than Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley but my excitement was much bigger instead. Right in the middle of the alley, at least 10 benches were placed where it was fully seated by people, enjoying their breakfast. The place was more like an Arabic version of tavern, it was traditionally interesting and magical, as like what I love about markets. Besides the outdoor area where you could see the real market life, they had 2 other indoor areas for family and we chose the left one where we usually went to as it was not our first time to be there. Weekend was always a busy time there, we needed to wait for like 15 minutes to be seated as it was full, not just with locals but also people from other Nations.

The new classic

The visitation on weekdays are usually not usually as busy as weekend

Oh, just some toys hanging out

Just one second after we sat, we couldn’t hardly wait to order our favourites as usual: It was Baked beans and cheese, Dhal, Scrambled eggs, Ommelete, Jibun with Pineapple jam, and of course Chai for the drink. I know, I know, most of you are not familiar with those food, but once you taste them, you’ll just love them.

The feast

Guess their names!

Let me tell you an interesting fact. In Indonesia, rice is a main food and is literally used in any kind of meal, anytime, even breakfast. What I learn here, rice is also a major thing but for breakfast, the famous Kubus bread is the one to chew instead. Any food that we ordered earlier come with this complimentary of this Kubus Bread, the round big bread that you can just rip off anyway you want (1 bread is more than enough for 1 person for breakfast, I swear!), a plate of Onion and Lemon, a plate of Cucumber and Tomato, and a plate of Random Leave that we don’t really know what (Sorry!).

Baked beans with cheese. Da yum!

We had our table covered by disposable plastic cloth, not because it was not fancy, but so that it was clean, because guess how we ate? Yes, we had none of personal plate, we ate it directly on the table!

We had to wait quite long for the food which was understandable do to their business. But when the food arrived, the Hunger Game was on! First each person should take the breads and put them right in front of you. Then just ripped it off and chose with what you want to, and in this case, everything was suitable. You could go with delicious scrambled eggs, or got tasty with baked beans. You could even go sweet with jibun which literally means cheese and pineapple jam, and just combine everything. They were all fine.

I took the first bite with the baked beans and put cucumber and tomato as my favourite. The second bite of my version had always to be jibun and the jam. loved them. As for the taste when you put different stuffs in the bread were incomparable. Each of them had their own great taste that you couldn’t just go with one thing, you always wanted to try everything. Don’t forget the chai, their version of milk and tea which was lighter to the Indonesian, Thai, or Malaysian version.

I have had experience with South-East Asian and Western breakfast most of the time but before I got to the Middle East, I had never experienced any Arabic style and what could be better to had it in the actual place. We got the great food and experience. Combo. Not to mention that they are healthy and vegetarian. This Arabian breakfast is definitely favourite. And they’re cheap to, according to the standard here, of course. Now I understand why this place was busy

After the breakfast, we took some walk around the place. Manama Souq is actually a really huge market, where you can find literally everything. Clothes, electronics, jewelry, souvenirs, you name it, they have it. It was mentioned as one of the very first Manama’s downtown as it’s literally in the heart of the city which now had been renewed by the government. Besides the magnificent white gate with pictures of old-self around its columns and walls, they had this modern shopping center inside it with some restaurants too.

See the rest of it by yourselves through some pictures I snapped. Manama Souq is literally a tradition with a modern touch.

Supermodels Galore

All fashion lovers might say “Bitch, I’ve finished reading them all already” but maybe for some of you who don’t give a damn about anything related to fashion and was just lost in this blog might will just say “Vogue what? Madonna’s old song from last century?” Well, that might somehow related to each other as well.

Alright, for you all who don’t know, Vogue is literally a fashion bible of the World. It’s the number one fashion magazine which first edition was published in 1892 in U.S.A. Until this very moment, Vogue had invaded the whole World with its high profile features as the toppest Fashion Magazine around the globe and published monthly in 23 different national and regional editions by Condé Nast.

As for September, this month’s edition is considered the most important edition through all the year because as we all know that September is January in Fashion. It’s the month when summer turns to autumn and all magazines are showing their choices of fashion from the fashion weeks in February – March earlier. Besides, some editions have their anniversary exactly in this month so there are always special surprises on Vogue September.

As it is a literally the highest name of a fashion magazine can be, any models who are on the cover of it will just get the whole fashion lovers of the world’s attention, especially for the editions which are named as the big four: Vogue U.S, British Vogue, Vogue Italia, and Vogue Paris. This month, there are 3 of most discussable by all fashionistas because of their cover surprises which also happen to be my favorite. Here you go.

Vogue Japan

We all know that Vogue Japan always puts the best model of the moment to be on it’s cover. Having Anna Dello Russo as at Editor-At-Large, Vogue Japan is having it’s 15 Anniversary this September 2014. For this special occasion, Vogue Japan features not only 1,2, 0r 3 but 15 supermodels on their cover as what they call as ‘”Icons of Perfection” who are 80’s legends: Claudia SchifferLinda EvangelistaNadja AuermannNaomi CampbellStephanie Seymour, 90’s supers: Carolyn Murphy,  Eva Herzigova, Guinevere Van Seenus, Karen Elson,  Maggie Rizer, and 00’s icons: Malgosia Bela, Mariacarla Boscono,  Natasha Poly, Saskia de Brauw,  Tao Okamoto. photographed by Luigi and Iango

The stars: Saskia de Brauw, Tao Okamoto, Maldosia Bela, Mariacarla Boscono, and Natasha Poly represents the 00’s, Carolyn Murphy, Eva Herzigova, Guinevere Van Seenus, Karen Elson, and Maggie Rizer for the 90’s icons, and Claudia Schiffer, Nadja Auermann, Stephanie Seymour, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell as the 80’s legends. cr:

When they first released the cover, everyone was so excited especially when we see the 80’s babe are back together in one shot (altough we missed Christy Turlington here) and all of the models are just very chic and fresh with sleek hairs and straight stunning faces posing infront of a white clean background.

This is a flip out cover which the 80’s legends are the one to be the main cover and the rest follows. This simple yet stunning images is gotta be one of my favourites of Vogue Japan which is famous with it’s white clean background on their covers. However, if I got to choose which models should represents their era, my picks are gonna be:

80’s: Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Carla Bruni, and Claudia Schiffer.

90’s: Laetitia Casta, Daria Werbowy, Karen Elson, Caroline Murphy, Eva Herzigova,

00’s: Natasha Poly, Mariacarla Boscono, Doutzen Kroes, Tao Okamoto, Jessica Stam

Vogue U.S

As the origin of the Vogue itself, Vogue U.S (Or just simply just Vogue as it’s like, the mother of all Vogues) is counted as the the most prestigious one. Led by Anna Wintour -rumour has it, the person who inspired the character of Miranda Priestley in Devil Wears Prada- as the Editor-in-Chief since 1988 (yes, before I was even born!) and one of the most influential persons in fashion, Any models will literally kill to be on the cover of it. Especially for recent years, when Anna Wintour prefers Actress or celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West to be on the cover that made everyone got made, including me.

But finally, when they first published the teaser of Vogue cover, we all got so happy because it was our favourite babes Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, and Karlie Kloss smiling to us on the cover. Yes! Real models now! FYI, the last model who appeared on Vogue cover was Kate Upton on June 2013, more than a year ago. Last year’s September itself put Jennifer Lawrence on the cover which yes, she was gorgeous, but we wanted someone who was high fashionably gorgeous from the Industry itself. So when we finally not just all models, but literally the biggest models at this moment showed up, I literally jumped!

But the surprise didn’t stop there. When the official image of the cover was released, turned out it was another flipped out cover and showed other fellows it-models who are Andreea Diaconu, Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Fei Fei Sun, Imaan Hammam, and Vanessa Axente. Amazing with capital A!

Full Cover: Joan Smalls, Cara Delevinge, Karlie Kloss, Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Fei Fei Sun, Vanessa Axente, Andreea Diaconu. cr:

Therefore, for some reasons, I personally think that this shot by the legendary fashion photographer Mario Testino is kinda boring. I mean, this is actually not the first time Vogue had group of supermodels on the cover, they did it maybe like 5 other times especially for September issues many years ago that featured many supermodels who lasts until now such as Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman, Coco Rocha, Liya Kebede, Gisele Bundchen, Doutzen Kroes, Lily Donaldson and tons of others, and this year’s group shot of September issue is maybe the least favourite one among others. Especially if we compare it to Vogue Japan, we’re like literally comparing Louis Vuitton to H&M. Not that H&M is bad, but you know what I mean, right? And if we relate that to their theme of “Instagirls”, some of the girls are just not that as popular as other models that we can name. So if I can rearrange it, the models who can possibly the best to be there are:

Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Toni Garrn, Constance Jablonski, Liu Wen, Edie Campbell, Cameron Russel, and Daria Strokous.

Vogue Italia

I don’t know how to start this but to just say: Vogue Italia is the champion! The Editor-in-Chief since 1988 Franca Sozzani with her team celebrate the 50th Anniversary of one of the World’s most important fashion magazine and feature not 9 like Vogue U.S, but triple the number of Vogue Japan cover models plus 5, yes 50 supermodels, I repeat 50 Supermodels!

The models are photographed by the one and only, Vogue Italia’s favourite, Steven Meisel. This is literally the most models on the cover in a fashion magazine by far.

They bring the most iconic living models exist on earth from the original supermodel trinity Linda-Naomi-Christy to the icons in the making like Fei Fei Sun and Sasha Luss.

The full cover photographed by Steven Meisel cr:

The 50 supermodels in alphabetical orders are Adriana Lima, Amanda Murphy, Amber Valletta, Cameron Russell, Caroline Trentini, Carolyn Murphy, Christy Turlington, Coco Rocha, Daria Strokous, Edie Campbell, Elise Crombez, Guinevere Van Seenus, Hilary Rhoda, Isabeli Fontana, Iselin Steiro, Jamie Bochert, Jessica Stam, Jourdan Dunn, Julia Stegner, Karen Elson, Karlie Kloss, Linda Evangelista, Liu Wen, Liya Kebede, Mariacarla Boscono, Meghan Collison, Miranda Kerr, Naomi Campbell, Natalia Vodianova, Natasha Poly, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Luss, Sasha Pivovarova, and Stella Tennant.

Many people were questioning where are some big names who are also Meisel’s favourite muses like Gisele Bundchen, Daria Werbowy, Anja Rubik, Doutzen Kroes and Kristen McMenamy but I’m just beyond happy about this cover and I’m not gonna bitching about my favourite models who are not on it should be on it. So yeah, bravo Italia!
